Mallika is the only person to officially register a case against a kidney broker with the police. She was offered $3000 for her kidney, but the broker, a man named Raja who runs a small tea shop, only gave her $700. Two weeks ago her 16-year-old son contracted jaundice that has destroyed his kidneys. He is now on dialysis at Stanley Hospital in Chennai. While being interviewed by WIRED News she broke down into tears saying "I wish I had never sold my kidney. I could have saved my son's life with it. Now I need to buy one on the black market, but I don't have the money to do it."
